Team Sustainable Pirates (2018-19)

Shipping, along with other big industries, is one of the responsible for pollution, emitting one billion tons of CO2 every year. In this project, the team is looking for new ways Wärtsilä can actively contribute to the marine zero emission ecosystem, by prototyping the future of the maritime industry. This can be done through propulsive efficiency, drive efficiency, hull resistance and capability, energy saving, fuels or use of energy on board.
Our aim is to solve this issue by pushing shipping towards zero emission.

Team Freelevator (2018-19)

Freelevator project is sponsored by Kone, the global leader in the elevator and escalator industry. The multi-disciplinary team is an international mix of five students of Aalto University Finland and four PG students of Design and Innovation Class of ISDI Mumbai.
As a part of the PDP challenge, the team has to design an elevator transport mechanism using omniwheels such that multiple elevators can move in one shaft structure. Additionally, the team should develop an elevator car that should move both vertically and horizontally. The main challenge is to design the control in a way so as to attain maximum efficiency by optimizing frictional losses.

Team Seasu (2018-19)

Currently, the use of ROVs (Remote Operated Vehicles) is mostly restricted to military applications, inspection of mechanisms and submersible structures or in the research branch.
Seasu came up with the purpose of changing that. Bringing together engineers and designers from Finland, Brazil, Italy, and Turkey, we have the mission to innovate in this market, find new scenarios for using submarine drone technology and develop revolutionary solutions.

Team Rapala (2018-19)

In order for a fisherman to be properly prepared for fishing in different environments, they have to carry dozens if not hundreds of lures with them everywhere. Even with a good selection of different shapes and colors, the lure will always be a compromise limited by its design.

To solve this we are developing a digital lure of which apparently can be altered on the fly. The ultimate lure will fit a wider range of environments and can be adjusted to even slightest changes in environmental conditions.

Team Pexray (2018-19)

Pexraytech is a high-tech startup company developing portable X-Ray machines for single use situations, such as X-Raying abandoned luggage or a suspicious package. We believe there is a similar opportunity to develop a transportable high capacity X-Ray machine. It is an unfortunate fact that for large events and public spaces security is becoming an increasing concern. Adding X-Ray machines to a security plan significantly reduces the risk of dangerous items being smuggled in. The problem is most venues do not require a permanent X-Ray machine and therefore need the machines shipped in. Currently there are no systems built with this transportation aspect in mind and getting the machines on location is a major hassle. By developing a transportable high capacity X-Ray machine we can reduce the friction of the delivery process and make spaces safer for everyone.

Team AI Xperience (2018-19)

Exclusion from an increasingly digitized society is a major threat, especially to citizens whose basic digital skills are already less developed than those of the rest of society. Our project is to design and built an AI experience. It is a part of the City of Espoo’s larger programme to build the happiest AI in the world, by providing a fun Artificial Intelligence experience applied in our everyday lives. The purpose is every one of us to be friends with Artificial Intelligence in a fun way. That`s why we are traveling all over the world with Phileas Fogg in 80 days to have fun!

Team Nose Knows (2018-19)

Smell is the most important sense for a dog. A dog’s nose as a sensor is more sensitive than any detection technologies available for testing diseases, contamination, organisms etc. When dogs are trained to recognize different smells, it stimulates the dog’s brain, reduces anxiety and strengthens the pet-human bond.
Our goal is to design a robotic device, which through play and reward trains dogs to recognize specific smells. After initial training, the robot works independently so the dog gets trained while the owner is away. This also keeps the dog engaged and channelizes their energy. Basically, the dog plays and learns when alone, instead of chewing on furniture 🙂
We are team Nose Knows, an interdisciplinary team consisting of students from Aalto University, Finland and Yonsei University, South Korea. Our sponsor Nose academy is a Finnish academic start-up company that does research on the use of canine smell behavior.

Team Floss (2018-19)

We are Team FLOSS and our project is to increase the value of an articulating arm design through LEAN production methods and innovation of the primary mechanisms which achieve our desired outcome: we work toward producing a high-quality stability arm to hold vibration/movement sensitive equipment such as an x-ray tube head or optical microscope.
The challenge is high to maintain the top of the line quality of the Focus arm while reducing the overall cost of the product. We will pursue our solutions by re-imagining the mechanics of the design and expanding upon the functionality of the part. Simultaneously, the new design has the goal of being easier to produce and disassemble.
With highly skilled students from Aalto University and Riga Technical University, we are set to bring to market a new and improved market-leading staple to dentist’s offices across the world.

Team Double V (2018-19)

Our mission is to create a revolutionary welding mask which brings the technology to the welding industry. Until now, technology is slightly implemented to the field even all the planning and design are done technically. We want to improve the quality, efficiency, and safety of the welding work by implementing VR & AR solutions to the welding mask.

There are three deliverables what the project aims:

Data output

By implementing the data input with AR, the welder is provided the information where and what should be welded next. Data output enhance the efficiency as the mask sends the result to the supervisor who can control the work effectively and make quality assurance where ever s/he is. Visibility ensures better working conditions for the welder and thus improves the quality of the welding.

The project is sponsored by Haapaniemen Tietotekniikka. Their knowledge of welding industry, product development, and software mixed with our multidisciplinary team consisting of mechanical and biomedical engineering, physics, design, and occupational health students make this project an exciting and surely a versatile journey.

But why the Double V? Did you know that virtual reality has been considered as early as in 1938 in the collection of essays called Le Théâtre et son Double by Antonin Ardaud.

Team Mind Matter (2018-19)

Memory disorders have never been more serious than it is in the modern day. With new advancements in medication and care facilities, why are we still unable to have a significant impact on its mitigation? This is the challenge that Team Mind Matter will pursue to resolve.

Our goal is to hinder the progress of memory disorientations at its early stages as opposed to finding the cure procedures once the individual is diagnosed with dementia or a similar symptom. We are aiming for creating an innovative solution for an adult daycare center which can help people with light to middle-level memory disorientations, to slow done or even ensure that the memory disorientations does not progress towards a memory disease. In doing so, we will take a course of prevention and ensure the maintenance of an individual’s memory level with stimulating activities, comfortable environments, and aesthetic architecture.

Team Bottle Squad (2018-19)

We are team Bottle Squad, a multidisciplinary group of designers, engineers, and business students. Combining the Aalto and Porto Design Factories – we want to solve one of the biggest problems that our world today faces: Plastic waste. By creating a universal bottle design that can be emulated across the world – we hope to shape a future in which all plastic bottles will have two lives: one as a bottle, and the other as something more.

Team MiCrane (2018-19)

Human errors cause most of the tower crane accidents in constructions sites, but with automatisation, those errors can be reduced and the operations in sites made safer, more reliable and efficient. However, developing requires a lot of testing, which is not safe, efficient or affordable to do on sites.

The team’s main task is to build a scale model of a construction site for testing purposes for our partner company Trenox. The scale model must include tower crane models, which perform the same way as real tower cranes.

Secondary, the scale model could also be used to present the automation system performance for Trenox customers.

Considering that the scale model is for testing the automation systems, the mechanical properties of the cranes or the site are not in the focus of the project.
